why does it take up to two months,
for a ordinary small packet china post to travel between the prc & the
us?, when it only takes 72 hours
between the us & the prc?, does
this type of mail travel via ocean?

Parcels are handled in bulk as part of a mail stream of many items. This makes things much slower, but also much cheaper, which is why mailing a parcel costs about 1/50th as much as an airline ticket.

China Post ordinary small packet takes about 40-60 days to reach the USA. It's transported by ship.
